Vitals: Born 9/12/47.
Graduated from Peru High School, Peru, Indiana 1965 (Music Major); 10th in a class of 265.
College 1965-1972 and beyond.
Ball State University 1965-1967. Science and Math Major for first semester. A mis-adventure in p-chem working with organic solvents (translation: my lab experiment went KA-BOOM!) led me to discover Philosophy (with the Dean of Science especially grateful that I transferred my major.) Moved to Goleta and Isla Vista (suburbs of Santa Barbara,) California to study photography at Brooks Institute of Photography.
1969: The Summer of Love! ... residence=wherever I happened to be and for 3 glorious days it was a little upstate NY place called Yeager's Farm ...aka Woodstock! Fall, 1969 ...Cornell University, phantom student and bridge player. Experimented with pottery (among other things). Addicted to "Dragon Mouth" {garlic bread extraordinaire!} at Johnnie's Big Red Bar and Grill.
1970-72 worked as gandydancer for C&O Railroad, driving spikes by hand.
Back to Ball State University. Graduated June 1972 (finally!).
Married 1976.
Began woodworking 1979, woodturning 1981. First instruction with Rus Zimmerman 1983.
Attended Arrowmont "Vision and Concept" first ever woodturning symposium October 1985 where, after pestering Sandy Blaine and David Ellsworth each and every hour of each and every day, we finally organized the American Association of Woodturners. Since then, I have devoted myself to turning (and more and more of sculpture). Travelled to Hawaii, Australia, Mexico, Bahamas, all over USA including Alaska in pursuit of turning.
Served on AAW Board of Directors for 6 years, 4 1/2 as Treasurer. Studied woodturning with: David Ellsworth, Rude Osolnik, Mike O'Donnell, Mike Hosaluk, Ray Key, John Jordan, Clay Foster and many others. That's enough for now. Time for me to get back to work!
